Team
Metalysis has approximately 60 employees based in South Yorkshire who are working on a combination of fundamental research into new products, product development and engineering scale-up. The Company also has a highly experienced IPR team and commercial team. Over 80% of its employees are at least degree qualified and over 50% hold relevant doctorates.
Whilst the Company is predominantly Venture Capital owned, all employees hold an equity stake in the Company and are passionately enthusiastic about the FFC technology and the wider economic and environmental benefits it will bring to specialist metals consumers.

Mark Bertolini – Chief Executive Officer
Mark graduated in Metallurgy from Leeds University before joining BAe Systems in 1984. In 1988 Mark moved to the US to develop and expand his managerial experience in high-tech manufacturing before returning to the UK in 1993. He took his first Managing Director role in 1998 in a subsidiary of Hampson Aerospace Group, a company manufacturing specialist components for the aerospace and defence sectors.
Mark has subsequently held several Managing Director roles within SPX Inc and the Carlyle Group, proving himself to be extremely adept at improving and growing sophisticated manufacturing businesses.
Mark joined Metalysis in 2006 as Chief Executive Officer.

Guppy Dhariwal – Chief Financial Officer
Guppy has a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Newcastle University and is now an FMCA.
He has operated at Financial and Managing Director level and has specialised in turnaround / profit improvement in a variety of blue chip companies. These have included GEC, STC, Thorn EMI and Amstrad, with products ranging from consumer durables, heavy engineering, telecommunications and electronics. He also spent two years working with Lord Sugar on acquisitions, disposals and operational efficiencies across the Amstrad business. Between 1998-2009, he contributed substantially to Aston University’s growth from a £38m enterprise to £100m high-performing university.
Guppy has held a number of non-executive appointments and currently, he is Director and Chair of the Finance and New Business Committee at Midland Heart.
Guppy joined Metalysis in 2010 as Chief Financial Officer and his extensive complex project funding and board level experience will be invaluable to Metalysis through the commercialisation process.

Chris Stokes - Commercial Director
Chris graduated in Materials Science from Manchester University in 1986 and joined the management development programme of GKN plc. Working through a number of commercial and operational posts in GKN subsidiaries he became Quality Director for GKN Axles in Birmingham in 1994. After the acquisition of the Axles division by DANA Corporation in 1995, he took over as Divisional Sales Director for DANA in Europe.
In 1998 Chris joined Schott AG as MD of the UK Fibre Optics subsidiary and worked for Schott in Germany between 2002 and 2005 as Vice President for Corporate Market Development.
Subsequently Chris has spent 3 years with specialty metals group AMG NV as Commercial Director for London & Scandinavian Metallurgical Co Ltd and 2 years with Hilti GB Ltd.

Lee Shaw – Technology Director
Lee Shaw joined Metalysis in February 2009 as Technology Director. He has a PhD in Metallurgy from Sheffield University and moved from the Ministry of Defence in 1990 to develop his career at ATI Allvac, the world’s third largest titanium producer. During his 15 years at ATI Allvac, Lee held a variety of roles culminating in Technology Manager for ATI’s Special Metal Products UK division with responsibility for quality and technology for production and development. In 2004 Lee joined Firth Rixson, the specialist UK super alloy, forging and ring producer, as Technical Director for the critical rotating forgings business later becoming Group Technical Director in 2007.
Lee has extensive experience in managing research and development technologies associated with titanium and other special metals.

Stephen Holloway – Engineering Director
Steve graduated from the University of Nottingham and holds a doctorate in applied chemistry. He has a strong international technical and commercial background gained through the development of new processes in the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors. During his career he has held a number of senior engineering and technology roles for Davy Process Technology, Yukos and, more recently Pranha Research & Engineering where he was responsible for bringing technologies to pre-demonstration status, building pilot plants and managing IP to commercialisation.
Steve joined Metalysis in January 2009 as Engineering Director and works closely with the technology and engineering teams on the development and scale-up of production processes.

Pelham Hawker – Chairman
Pelham Hawker was appointed Chairman in June 2009. He has extensive experience in commercialising technology in the company’s target markets. More recently, as a main board director on Johnson Matthey plc, Pelham successfully reorganised two divisions of the business to achieve aggressive group financial goals through global sales. He has a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol.

Tony Pedder – Non-Executive Director
Tony has over thirty years experience in the metals industry. He is a past Chief Executive of Corus and the current Chairman of Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd, a leading producer of heavy cast and forged steel products for the oil and gas, marine, aerospace, construction and heavy engineering sectors.

Jonathan Coppin – Non-Executive Director
Jonathan joined the Board in August 2009. He was head of Corporate Law at Hogan and Hartson and specialises in major licensing and joint venture M&A deals. Recently he has worked on the Tata/Ford acquisition and the Nokia/Seimens merger. His appointment will facilitate Metalysis when negotiating with major corporates.
