The process used by Metalysis can also produce carbides, through reduction of a mixture of the oxide with carbon.
Carbides are largely consumed in the powder form, making a good fit with the Metalysis product. Furthermore, the process can be used to make the more exotic, high value carbides such as tantalum carbide and chromium carbide (as well as the more general tungsten carbide and silicon carbide.)
Metalysis has successfully made tantalum carbide at lab scales.
