Analytical Services

Metalysis purpose built state of the art Analytical testing facility, dedicated to the chemical and physical characterisation of metal powders, ceramics and molten salts, has been operational since 2008. The resident staff have over 30 years combined experience, performing contract analysis, and providing method development solutions to the metals and related industries. Our primary expertise relates to tantalum, titanium & its alloys, and their respective oxides, however we can also analyse a variety of other materials. A wide range of equipment is housed in the laboratory, including:

Chemical Analysis

  • Oxygen & Nitrogen via gas fusion (Eltra ON-900).
  • Carbon & Sulphur via gas fusion (Eltra CS-800).
  • ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry) for trace metal determination (Thermo XSERIES 2), including an associated HF (hydrofluoric acid) area for sample digestion.

Physical Analysis of Powders

  • Surface Area Determination (Micromeritics).
  • Particle Size Distribution (Malvern Mastersizer 2000).
  • Hall Flow (ASTM B213).
  • Scott Density (ASTM B329).
  • Rheometry (Brookfield Powder Flow Tester).
  • Load Testing (Tinius Olsen H5KT Benchtop Tester).

Microscopy

  • SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) – JEOL JSM-6490V incorporating EDX (Energy Dispersive X-Ray) analysis.
  • Sample Preparation.

Molten Salt Analysis

  • Moisture Determination (Mettler Toledo DL31 Karl Fischer Titrator).
  • Oxide Content (Mettler Toledo T50 Titrator).
